how much does a fly lure weigh?
what is the average weight, or range of weights, of lures used for typical fly fishing?
there are some regulars on here that should come along and give you a better answer but as I don't see them yet I'll give it a shot.
the correct term is flys not lures (and the plural form is flys not flies, and they are tyed not tied, I don't know why but the old english spelling is used) to be more specific dry flys for above water insect imitations, nymphs for below water insect larva, streamers for fish imitations, there are a few more that tend to be specific to particular stages in aquatic insect life cycles and non-aquatic insects but you get the idea.
that's a tough one to answer because I use a wide variety of flys, I have no experience with salt water flys but I'll tell you what I know about fresh water flys. a size 22 dry fly is just a tiny fraction of an ounce, some of the streamers and large stone fly nymphs that I tye with lead wire (for weight) I'd guess are somewhere near a 1/4 to 1/2 ounce. assuming you average nymphs and drys out to a size 14 bead head pheasant tail (would be about right for my fishing) then you end up somewhere near 2 grams (I'm guessing here), that's about .004 lbs or roughly the weight of a dime.
as you can see they weigh very little, they are cast by the weight of the fly line, or a special weighted float if you want to use flys with a spinning rod.
