has anyone been to notre dame university? did you fly direct to south bend or drive from chicago?
hmm- never thought of train. which train? amtrak?
i had a few friends who attended Notre Dame, and to get there, they would fly to chicago and then travel by bus to south bend. The ND website (first link) gives directions from Chicago's airports and says that it is about a two hour drive.
You can also take the South Shore Line (train) from Chicago to South Bend - see the schedules on the second link. The South Shore might cost you $10.35 from Chicago to South Bend one way. Coach USA runs a bus from Chicago's airports to South Bend - see the 3rd link - fares are $33 one-way.
