94 Eagle Talon...What to do when a rod falls to the oil pan (other than junking the car).?

Hi, I have an 94 Eagle Talon 2.0...........the water pump went out=:( So my boyfriend takes it apart replaces the water pump and puts it back together. Everything was fine but just a little off on the timing. So I have someone help him with the timing (should of just let him do it by himself) and this person missed the timing mark just a little so he turns the crankshaft backwards. My boyfriend told him you can't do that but he said it wouldn't hurt any. Is this true? Now when he started the car it made a loud banging kinda of noise. Well now it won't start at all and my boyfriend says the crankshaft woun't turn. He thinks one of the rods fell into the oil pan and I wanted to know if he can just put back the one rod or does he need to reset all of them now. Please help. I love this car and don't want to junk it. To many other new parts to do that. And its cheap on gas. With gas prices the way they are...I need this car.

It doesn't hurt to turn it backwards, except it can loosen the crank bolt, which still won't cause what you are describing. Take it to a mechanic and let them check it out. Rods don't fall into the oil pan, they break off of the crank and jam the motor up and really tear stuff up. No, you can't just put it back on. Have a trusted pro take a look at it. They shouldn't charge much if it is obvious, getting it fixed could be expensive, good luck.
