Help with my unknown bacteria from microbiology class!?
In my microbiology class, I was assigned an unknown culture with two species. I also recieved the details that the source of specimen was from the sputum. The symptoms were lobar pneumonia with cystic fibrosis. I isolated them on petri plates. One was a gram negative rod and the other was a gram positive cocci. The gram negative rod streak show dark red colonies. I did some tests and thought to believe it as Pseudomas aeruginosa. However my classmates have told me that it couldn't be P. aeruginosa since it's red colonies and not green. Is there a possibility that it could still be P. aeruginosa? I've looked online and P. aeruginosa is found in cases of CF. Also, my other unknown showed little yellow colonies. I identified as Micrococcus lutueus, yet I'm not quite sure if that is related to lobar pneumonia. I guess what I'm asking is that am I on the right track? Or far from it?
The agar was nutrient agar that I isolate both yellow and red colonies
Haha, the same organisms turn up nearly every time on these. The yellow one is probably Micrococcus luteus or Staphylococcus aureus. Both can be associated with pulmonary infections including pneunonias.
If you're happy with Micrococcus, OK....
Some Micrococcus sp. are now known as Kocuria sp.

You can see if it's Staph by the appearance after gram staining if you are gentle with it and don't break up the clusters....see the 2nd link.
P. aeroginosa spreads on plates, sometimes swamping them and overgrowing all the other organisms. Right nuisance it is.
P. pyocaenia does the same and is greener than aerogenosa.
It grows in almost anything including many types of 'antiseptic' handwash creams. We've isolated it from Savlon dispensers.....fat lot of good....
Pseudomonas can infect almost anywhere. It isn't too fussy about food or conditions.

Red colonies may be due to Serratia marcesens, which can be red or white, and may have been the answer to a 'miracle' in the 13th C where 'drops of blood' were involved. It's colonies often look like drops of blood.
It infects the respiratory tract and other parts, so it may be the organism you have.It comes up on college tests quite often.
