i want to start fly fishing what is a good setup to start with?
i want to start fly fishing but i don't want to start with a cheap rod and a reel made from plastic so whats a good setup to start with a cheap price
I started earlier this summer with an outfit from Cabels's. I got the 5wt Wind River outfit and have been nothing but pleased. I have 30 small lakes with in 15 minutes of my home and have used this Fly outfit 2 to 3 times a week all summer with outstanding results. I haven't replaced it yet with a upgrade because I can't find a better upgrade under $500.
I've caught everything in warm water with this outfit except Catfish and it's handled it exceptionally. I've also used it to fish Trout in Missouri streams and have casted #18 and #16 dry files as well and anybody with a Sage, Winston, or Orvis rod. Plus I can't say enough good things about Cabels's customer service.
Side note: The St. Croix 9ft 5wt will run you $260 for the rod alone. The Sage 9ft 5wt will also run you $225. I paid $134 total with tax for the Wind River. I've stood side by side and casted with these other rods. Their not worth the extra money.
