In what direction should a rocketship fly so that to a person on earth and in the ship, a rod (which is in the?
which is in the ship) will have the same length. The ship id flying at .9c
should it be parallel, or perpendicular to the lenght of the rod, or can it be both?
If Alice sits in her shiny spaceship with this rod and Bob sits on the Earth looking out at her and going "gee, I wish I had a spaceship," then when Alice goes 0.9 c, Bob will see something interesting: her entire spaceship will look, to Bob, squished by a factor of : ? = 1/?( 1 - ?² ) = 1/?( 1 - 0.9² ) = 2.3.
This will include the rod inside. The rod must be perpendicular to the spaceship if Alice wants to avoid this squishing effect from Bob's perspective.
However: you must understand that the squishing effect is symmetric. In other words, Alice also sees the Earth squished by the same factor ?, as from her perspective the Earth is travelling in the opposite direction with the same speed v.
