Is bamboo a good building material?
I am building a makeshift roof for a small project, hopefully out of bamboo. I know bamboo has an incredible tinsel strength, but is it structurally sound when completely exposed to the elements assuming that its thick enough, also how thick should a bamboo rod be? (it is located in the Northeastern United States)
Bamboo is a very resilient building material. You can bend it to a large degree and it will still retain its shape. It is also very resistant to sun and rain. In fact, vast tracts of fishing pens here in the Philippines submerge bamboo poles in sea water to fence off their areas. I'm not very sure with the climate there in Northeastern United States, but as a rule of thumb, if bamboo grows there in your area naturally, then it can stand the climate. Bamboo rods can be anywhere from an inch across, perfect for sidings and walls, to five inches across, perfect for foundations and beams.
